How an SMS QR code works
An SMS QR code encodes an SMSTO: payload - your number plus an optional pre-written message. When someone scans it, their messaging app opens with the recipient and text already filled in. One tap sends it. It is the simplest way to run a text-to-join or scan-to-request campaign off print.
Where SMS QR codes shine
- Opt-in campaigns - "Scan to text JOIN for 10% off" on flyers, receipts, and packaging.
- Support and feedback - a pre-filled "I need help with…" to your support line.
- Events - scan to text a keyword for schedules or check-in; see our QR attendance guide.
Want scan analytics?
This static code cannot be tracked. For scan counts and an editable destination, use a dynamic QR code pointing at a landing page, or a plain URL QR. Learn how to track QR code scans.

How does an SMS QR code work?▾
It encodes an SMSTO link with your number and an optional pre-written message. Scanning it opens the messaging app with the recipient and text already filled in, ready to send.
Can I pre-fill the text message?▾
Yes. Whatever you type in the message field is pre-filled so the person only taps send - useful for keywords, opt-ins, or support requests.
Which phones support it?▾
Most modern iPhone and Android cameras open the SMSTO format. If a camera does not, Google Lens handles it. Test on your target device before printing a large run.
Can I track scans?▾
Not with this static code - SMS QRs encode a message, not a URL, so there is nothing to route through a tracking server. For counts, place a separate dynamic URL QR nearby.
