What you get with a dynamic QR

Editable Destination

Printed 5,000 flyers and the landing page broke? Change the URL in your dashboard — every existing QR now points to the new page. Zero reprints, zero waste.

Real-time Analytics

See every scan: country, city, device, browser, OS, referrer, timestamp. Compare placements, identify peak times, and quantify your offline marketing ROI.

A/B Test Anything

Split traffic between two landing pages with sticky cookies. Find which page converts best without printing two batches of cards.

Privacy-first

IP addresses are hashed before storage — never stored raw. GDPR-compliant by design. Your analytics, your control.

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code is a QR code whose destination URL can be changed at any time — even after the code has been printed on thousands of materials. Unlike a static QR code, which encodes the final URL directly into the pattern, a dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL (something like scanely.io/r/abc123) that points to a destination you control on a dashboard.

When someone scans the QR, the system briefly checks your dashboard, redirects them to the current destination, and logs the scan event (location, device, time). The redirect happens in under 50 milliseconds — the user doesn't notice anything different from a regular QR scan. Full primer in our what is a dynamic QR code guide.

When dynamic beats static

Static QRs are fine for permanent, never-changing content (your homepage, a single product page that won't move). Dynamic QRs win the moment any of these become true:

  • You might change the destination later. Seasonal menu, expired promo, redesigned landing page, new ordering system.
  • You want to see who scanned, from where, on what device. A static QR is a black box — once printed, you have no idea if it's working.
  • You're printing more than ~100 units. Reprinting cost rises fast; a single static URL change can waste your whole print budget.
  • You want to A/B test landing pages. Only dynamic QRs support split traffic to multiple destinations.
  • The QR will live on packaging, business cards, signage — anything you'd rather not reprint when the URL changes.

See our trackable QR guide for the full breakdown.

Free plan covers 3 dynamic QR codes and 1,000 scans per month — enough for one small business or a single test campaign.

Pair it with our other free tools

Before printing, run the QR through our QR size calculator to make sure it's big enough for the scan distance. Tag your URL with our UTM builder so the scan also shows up in your Google Analytics. For business cards specifically, our vCard QR generator pairs perfectly with this dynamic URL QR — one saves your contact, the other links to your latest portfolio.

Who uses dynamic QR codes

Restaurants use them on table tents (menu URL changes weekly), retailers on packaging (seasonal promos rotate), real estate agents on yard signs (property gets sold, redirect to similar listings), healthcare practices on aftercare cards (booking link rotates), and event organizers on posters (schedule updates daily during the event). Frequently asked questions

Is the dynamic QR code free?
Yes. Scanely's free plan includes 3 dynamic QR codes and 1,000 scans per month — enough for one small business or a test campaign. Paid plans unlock more codes, more scans, A/B testing, and team features.
Can I edit the QR code's destination URL later?
Yes — that's the whole point of a dynamic QR code. Once you've signed up, the destination URL lives in your dashboard. Change it anytime, and every printed QR pointing to the same short link will redirect to the new destination.
Will my printed QR break if I cancel my account?
If you cancel the account, the redirect for that QR stops working and the printed code becomes a dead link. Free accounts don't expire — you can keep your codes live forever without upgrading. We won't suspend a free account that's within plan limits.
How is dynamic different from a URL shortener like Bitly?
Mechanically similar — both route through a short link. But a dynamic QR generator is built for printed materials: visual QR customization (colors, size, logo), download formats (PNG, SVG, PDF), QR-specific analytics (device, location, peak scan times), and A/B testing for landing pages. Most shorteners don't ship those features in their free tiers.
What happens to the static preview I downloaded?
The static preview you downloaded above is a regular QR code with your destination URL baked in. It works forever — but you can't edit it or track scans. If you sign up and create the dynamic version, the dynamic QR (which looks different — it encodes a Scanely short link, not your destination directly) is the one to print.
