UPC-A · 2px modules · quiet zone included
UPC-A is 12 digits, including the check
The number system digit sits at the left of the bars, five digits sit under each half, and the check digit sits at the right. Enter the first 11 digits if you do not have the check digit yet. Enter all 12 if you are confirming a number you already use. A wrong twelfth digit does not produce a barcode of the bad number.
The sample 036000291452 is a known valid check-digit example so you can see the layout. Replace it before you print anything that identifies a real product.
Quiet zone and print size
UPC-A needs empty space on both sides of the bars. That margin is part of the PNG and SVG. Module width of 2px is a screen preview; 3px or 4px is a more practical start for a label. Scan the printed label with the same type of scanner that will read it in production. A phone camera is a weak test for UPC.
US retail, Amazon, and GS1
UPC-A is the 12-digit barcode on packaged goods in the United States and Canada. Retailers, distributors, and Amazon listings ask for that number when the product is sold as a standard retail unit. The first digits usually come from a company prefix, the middle digits identify the item, and the last digit is the check. Enter 11 digits to have the check added, or 12 to verify a number you already print.
The image is not a GS1 prefix. If you sell under your own brand, the prefix on the package has to be one you are allowed to use. GS1 issues those prefixes. Do not put the sample number 036000291452 on a product. It is on this page so the layout is visible.
A marketplace listing still needs the correct UPC. This page does not create that number or send it anywhere. Draw the symbol only after the number is yours, then follow the packaging spec for size and quiet zone. A phone camera is a weak test. Scan a printed proof with the kind of scanner that will read it in a store.
The UPC tells a checkout what the product is. It does not open your store, a manual, or a warranty page. Put a Scanely QR on the same package for that link. You can change the page after the carton is printed, and Scanely counts the scans. See pricing and QR codes for retail packaging.
How to create a UPC-A barcode
- Enter the 11 data digits, or all 12 if you are checking an existing UPC.
- Confirm the check digit in the status line, then download PNG or SVG.
- Print a sample at the size on the package and scan it before the run.

Retail numbers outside this 12-digit form usually want EAN-13. Internal warehouse IDs that include letters want Code 128, which is the format many inventory scanners expect. You can switch formats without leaving the barcode generator.
